You might think that the rollered hairstyles, cute candy colours and happy-go-lucky swinging tunes are simply a thing of the past, belonging to Grease re-runs. However, hidden into a corner of Abbeydale Road’s antique and vintage quarter, lies a haven of kitsch hairdressing delight.
Stepping into Purdy’s is like stepping back into the ‘50s. Everything is vintage and authentic, from the baby pink hairdryers to the spinning records to the well thumbed through magazines. Having opened just six weeks ago, owner Jane Infanti is a lover of all things vintage, specialising in styles reminiscing all eras from the 1940s-70s. “The salon is vintage style, because that’s the kind of style I like. But I do everything else as far as hairdressing and treatments as well.”
And there’s certainly nothing out dated about Purdys, Jane says whilst she likes vintage style, she specialises in combining this with modern fashion to give each look a contemporary twist. If that isn’t your thing, though, Jane also offers a range of modern hair styles and treatments. Fully qualified in all areas of hairdressing, Jane offers all services from cuts and colours to themed wedding hair and hen parties, bringing the full vintage experience to homes or in salon. Purdy’s also offers a range of beauty treatments, all provided in their Moroccan inspired beauty room.
I put my hair in Jane’s hands to be transformed into a modern take on a vintage wonder. Jane used curling tongs, exclusive boutique brand, Percy & Reed, hairspray and dry shampoo, and a wealth of hair grips to produce an early ’60s inspired style.
Purdy’s offers an experience unique to any other salon in Sheffield. A truly vintage salon, I could finally live the Grease dream. For anyone wanting to reminisce on days gone by, experience what the ’50s was all about or even achieve an authentic ‘60s hairstyle, Purdy’s is the place. I’d recommend it for the retro tea cups alone!
